Singapore Writers Festival(SWF) is backfor its 27th edition, featuring over 200 over programmes engaging in themes and topics that exploring this year’s theme - In Our Nature. This year's gathering of authors, writers, poets and literature buffs takes place from 8 to 17 November, and features over 300 local and international presenters.
A particular highlight for music fans is the inclusion of Mercury Prize nominee Sam Lee. The British singer-songwriter is best known for his acclaimed folk albums, which includes his latest LP, songdreaming, released earlier this year.
Beyond that, Lee is also a passionate conservationist and song collector, dedicated to restoring and sharing ancient music from Britain and Ireland, in particular from the Romany Gypsy and Irish traveller communities. In 2021, he also published his debut novel, The Nightingale: Notes on a Songbird, which chronicles the saga of this endangered bird, and its place in culture, folklore, music and literature throughout the millennia.
The author and songsmith will be involved in 2 programmes at The Arts House, Play Den.
On Saturday, 16 November, Lee hosts a performance lecture called The Nightingale: An Evening with Sam Lee. Throughout the evening, Lee will share his interest in nature and folk music, as well as details from his aforementioned book. After the talk, he will also serenade the audience with his repetroire of folk songs. Tickets for this session are $15 and can be purchased here.
On Sunday, 17 November, Lee will be involved in a programme entitled The Call of the Jungle. For this event, Lee will be in conversation with Singaporean poet and musician ArunDitha. These two speakers from very different cultural backgrounds discuss their common love for poetry and music, and how they use these artforms to convey the earnest stories and heartfelt emotions that make us human.
