George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series Nine Voyages is going in another direction.

With a blog post published on Sunday (31/12), the Game of Thrones novelist announced that Nine Voyages, the planned prequel to House of the Dragon following the story of Corlys Velaryon, has pivoted from live action to animation.

"We have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation," Martin revealed in his post. "A move I support fully."

The new direction comes due to "budgetary contstraints" as half the show would take place at sea. "There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway," Martin writes, after showering Netflix's Edo period-inspired animated series Blue Eye Samurai with praise.

Nine Voyages is under development by Bruno Heller. The series, alongside two other animated Game of Thrones spin-offs, hasn't been greenlit, according to Martin, revealing that they are "getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them."

Season 2 of House of the Dragon will premiere in Summer 2024.

In the meantime, check out the teaser trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2.
