girl in red is far and away one of the affecting and exciting Gen Z icons to have emerged from the atlternative pop sphere in recent years. Buoyed by relatably honest and emotionally provocative lyricism, her energetic anthems of youthful yearning and boundless love have propelled the Norwegian artist from indie darling to a bonafide mainstream star.
Even if you weren't all that familiar with her fantastic repertoire (which now includes her latest studio album, I'm Doing It Again Baby! released this past April), you would have walked away from her debut concert in Singapore newly converted fan. Held at Esplanade Theatre as part of the Mosaic Music Series, girl in red's local fanbase were out in full force (with many dressed in red, or attired in button ups and black ties).

Even prior to the show starting, the crowd's pent-up enthusisam was infectious. But when girl in red took to the stage, that shrieky teen passion turned up to 11. And why not? Beyond her obviously phenomenal musicianship, wonderful voice and astute songcraft - this preternaturally cool singer-songwriter is certainly one of the most effortlessly charismatic personalities of her generation.
From her multi-instrumental expertise and dynamic stage prescence, to her genuinely effervescent banter (plus infinity points when she expressed her love for Basheer Graphic Books) and adorable crowd interactions (when she realised a girl near the front was celebrating her 18th birthday, she took the time to grab the newly-legal audience member a beer from backstage) - girl in red was captivating from start to finish.

The energy that she – and her band, who were impeccably tight and just as animated – commanded was palpable. Thunderous applause, joyful jumping, inarticulate screaming and cathartic sing-alongs (which at times drowned out girl in red's actual vocals) made this an unforgettable hour and a half for the kids in attendance - and even this older millennial who got swept up in it all.
